Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes! We welcome all abilities to every session and frequently have complete beginners come along to have a go. The classes are very friendly and there will be someone to help you settle in and set up.
Whilst we encourage artists to leave out their work at the end of the sessions, there is absolutely no requirement to do so if that makes you uncomfortable.
Our regular classes are untutored, but someone will be on hand if you need a couple of pointers on how to get started. If you would like a total beginners taught class, keep your eye on our Eventbrite schedule as we run one approximately every 6-8 weeks. -
We do not supply materials at the class, so you will need to bring paper (either loose paper or a sketchbook) and some art materials (pencil, charcoal, pens, whatever you like to draw with!)
We do have drawing boards available to borrow, but only a couple of easels (first come first served!) You are very welcome to bring your own easel along, many do.
Many people bring a waterbottle or snack with them, and there is hot water available if you want to bring a travel cup and make your own hot drink. -
We use Eventbrite to sell our tickets. Please click here to take you to our Eventbrite page where you can scroll down and see the upcoming classes available and book a ticket.

A two-hour class, drawing from a nude model. There will be a variety of poses (lots of short format 1-5 minute poses, increasing to a 45 minute pose)
We have around 20-24 artists per session, and you will be seated on chairs in a circle around the model (unless you prefer to work from an easel - we only have a few available, so safest to bring your own!) You can use one of our drawing boards to lean on, or bring a hardback sketchbook.
No one is teaching, you are left to draw as you wish, but there will be someone facilitating the session, welcoming you, calling out the times of the poses and on hand for any questions throughout the evening.
There is a 10 minute break in the middle of the class.
The classes are fun and friendly, but we are focused and quiet whilst drawing. We play soft music in the background. (NB: We are based in a working theatre, so you will often hear music from rehearsals or singing classes, or even the occasional live performance in the background!) -
We ask for three days notice on refunds or exchanges.
For refunds, please request a refund through Eventbrite (follow the links on your booking/ticket confirmation) and we will process that for you. Please note that Eventbrite will still take off their booking fee (6.95% + £0.59) so you will not receive the total amount back I’m afraid.
For exchanging to a different class, please email exeterlifedrawing@gmail.com or use the ‘contact the organiser’ button on Eventbrite, and we’ll do that for you, as long as there is space available on the requested session.
Please do not send requests for refunds or exchanges through social media channels.Refunds or requests with less than three days notice: you are welcome to request a refund or exchange, but we do not guarantee it.
We cannot retrospectively offer refunds or exchanges.

Our classes run from the top floor of the Cygnet Theatre, Friars' Gate, Exeter, EX2 4AZ. It’s near to Exeter Quayside. Google map link here
There is limited free on street parking around the venue after 6pm, particularly along Colleton Crescent. There is a nearby car park at Magdalen Street Car Park. It's very walkable from the city centre and public transport routes.
If the Cygnet Theatre is unavailable to us (a few times a year) we occasionally use Exeter Community Centre, 17 St. David’s Hill, Exeter EX4 3RG.
The venue will be printed on your ticket booking. -
Yes, you have to book a ticket through our Eventbrite page, but you can book right up until the class starts if there are tickets available.
We do not currently offer on the door tickets/walk-ins. If the demand for the classes changes, we will definitely re-think this. -
Apologies! We are aware the demand is high for the sessions, especially between October and March. Spring/Summer classes are often quieter.
You are welcome to contact us (though our contact us form, or on exeterlifedrawing@gmail.com) if you would like a spot in a particular class, and we’ll let you know if one becomes available.
We advise you book ahead as much as possible for the sessions to guarantee a place. We try to list the classes on Eventbrite 1-2 months in advance.

Our regular sessions are £12 per ticket, per class. We will endeavor to keep it at this rate until either the model fees or the studio hire fees increase.
The Beginners Taught class is £24 per ticket, to cover the teaching, materials and a much smaller class size.
There will be other occasional price differences, for example for double model sessions, some of the themed classes, or the Christmas social. -
If you have prior experience as a life model, please contact us through our contact form or on exeterlifedrawing@gmail.com . Please include your name, age, contact number, information about where/how much you’ve modelled before, and either a rough indication of your body type or some examples of drawings of you.
We do receive a lot of model requests, so please bear with us!
If you have no prior experience as a model, we advise that you:
- Attend a few life drawing classes as an artist, so you can understand the format and how models work
- Practice poses at home, to build up a ‘library’ of poses you can do for 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30+ minutes.
- Talk to an existing life model and do some research online (there are plenty of articles and forums about life modelling)
We are ultimately always looking for models who can deliver a brilliant, interesting and professional class to our artists. Your creative ideas are always welcome in our space. -
Any essential information will be emailed to you, but we are active on Instagram as @exeter_life_drawing, where we post weekly updates and artwork from the classes.
-
Anyone aged 16 or over is welcome to attend the sessions. Due to the sensitive nature of working with a nude model, we can’t facilitate working with younger students. Please note that we work from both female and male models.
-
We run these sessions approximately every 6-8 weeks. Keep and eye out on our Eventbrite listings! You’re also welcome to contact us, as it’s useful to know the demand for these sessions.
-
We often advertise on our instagram page who the model is that week, but we can’t guarantee 100% certainty of any model due to scheduling issues or illness. All of our models are incredible, so you will always have a great class!
-
We cannot share model’s contact details directly, but if you send a message via our contact form or email exeterlifedrawing@gmail.com, we will pass on the information to our list of models.
-
Yes, we can offer private sessions for your group.
A private class costs £280, and you will get:
- A 2 hour private life drawing class for up to 25 artists
- A beautiful venue and an experienced life model
- An experienced life drawing tutor to guide and facilitate the session
- All equipment and art materials provided
We facilitate a fun, kind and supportive space. The sessions are relaxed and friendly (though, we are there for an actual life drawing class, as opposed to Hen Do style fun!)
You'll come away with at least 15 drawings, some new techniques and confidence, and a warm glow from learning something new :)
You are welcome to bring your own drinks and snacks. Then just leave the rest to us and enjoy the class.
To enquire about a private session please use our contact form or email exeterlifedrawing@gmail.com
